September

Boerne Public Library, during the entire month of September, will be taking in non-perishable food items in lieu of fines for overdue books. For every dollar you owe, you can bring in a box or can of food. If you owe 75 cents then you need to bring in one item; if you owe $5.75 then you need to bring in six items. This program is not for those who owe money only on damaged or lost materials. All food that is collected will be delivered to Hill Country Family Services.

Saturday

Leon Springs Farmer's Market is held every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Leon Springs Baptist Church, 24133 Boerne Stage Road, behind HEB.

Vendors offer plants, herbs and a variety of edibles, from fresh produce to honey, nuts, breads, jams and jellies. Live music will be heard all morning. Call Mario Obledo Jr. at (210) 823-3393 with questions regarding the Leon Springs Farmers Market or visit www.LeonSpringsFM.com .

Boerne Public Library’s fall book sale will feature thousands of books for sale on Saturday. Books of every kind and subject will be up for grabs starting at 9 a.m. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Boerne Library Annex, 282 Main Street (Main at Lohman) in the old Boerne Star building. The library sale is held this month in conjunction with Boerne Market Days in the plaza.

Prices of the books range from 20 cents for some children’s books and 50 cents for paperbacks to $10 for coffee table books.

There will also be DVDs, videos, music CDs and vintage LPs, plus books on tape in either cassette or CD format. The majority of the books have been donated by library patrons, but a few have been retired from library shelves.

Spring Creek United Methodist Church will hold its10th anniversary celebration from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church’s grounds at 28970 Old Fredericksburg Road just north of Fair Oaks Parkway. Everyone is welcome. There will be door prizes, games and hayrides for everyone.

Sept. 18

American Cancer Society’s Fashion Show is set 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at Ranch at The Rim, 18007 Interstate 10 W (in front of Bass Pro Shop). Local celebrities and cancer survivors will model the latest ranch chic fashions. Experts will help you find the perfect outfit for the season. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Sept. 19

Grey Forest Farmers Market is held 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. the first and third Friday of each month at a new location on Scenic Loop Road, across from the Grey Forest City Hall and next to the Fire Department at the corner of Scenic Loop and Sherwood Trail. Shop for fruits, jellies, veggies, eco-tote bags, plants, pecans, peaches, breads, cookies, note cards and locally produced goods of all types.

Sept. 25

Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce seeks sponsors for the Aubrey E. “Sandy” Sanderson Golf Tournament, set for Sept. 25 at the Buckhorn Golf Club. The event is held to raise funds for scholarships awarded annually. Sponsorship levels are available at levels ranging from $1,250 to $3,500. Sept. 27

Boerne Parks & Recreation’s Community Ed program will feature youth and adult art classes, instructed by Susan Barnes, who has introduced two weekend art workshops, with the first on Sept. 27.

Come for half a day or for the full day. The Cibolo Nature Center hosts an assortment of subjects for creative drawing in the morning and water color painting in the afternoon. Barnes’ five-week creative drawing and watercolor courses will start Sept. 29 at the Cibolo Nature Center Auditorium as well. She also will be starting her five-week Teen Studio the same day in the auditorium. Susan’s Fine Art for Kids Class will be going on every Wednesday in October this session. Oct. 4

Messiah Lutheran Church's annual Oktoberfest is Oct. 4. Oktoberfest is an old-fashioned celebration from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free. Entertainment will include: The Boerne Village Band, Fire on the Mountain Cloggers, arts and crafts booths. Messiah Sowers will have their handmade quilts available to purchase. We will have games for the children and the Oktoberfest Train will be available for rides! There will be a Quilt Raffle as well as a Silent Auction. Homemade sausage and sauerkraut, green beans, potato salad, iced tea, coffee and desserts (alternative meal available for children) will be served beginning at 4 p.m. Dinner tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children (ages 5 to 12). Oct. 18

American Cancer Society’s Cattle Baron’s Gala is set for 7 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 18 at Sunset Station, 1174 E. Commerce, San Antonio. The western-themed gala is American Cancer Society’s largest local fundraiser. The evening includes entertainment by Steve Wariner, Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Party, live and silent auctions. Oct. 26

Czech Heritage Day Festival is set Oct. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Come enjoy an afternoon of great music, food, games, and displays.

The festival will be at KC Hall, 5721 Rigsby, Highway 87 East near

Loop 410 in southeast San Antonio. A Czech meal will be served for $7 for adults and $3 for children under 10. The menu is pork roast, sausage, sauerkraut, potatoes, and peaches. Drinks, kolaches and desserts will be available. There will be cultural and genealogy displays, dominoes, taroky and a silent auction. For more information call (210) 649-2702.

Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Kendalia seeks volunteers to help all orphaned and injured native wildlife who need caring hands – animals who would suffer or die if Wildlife Rescue and its team of staff and volunteers were not there to save their lives.
