Clark continues to find unique ways to pull off victories. During their four weeks of play, the Cougars have rallied in the fourth quarter for three of their wins, while getting the victory rather convincingly. Whatever the situation the effort has enabled Clark to post a 4-0 season record and 2-0 District 28-5A mark. No question the confidence is high, especially after this past Saturday’s 24-17 thriller over Stevens. After opening league play with a 49-7 victory over Brandeis, Clark returned to its old script of pulling off a win in the final minutes like the Cougars did in non-district wins over Churchill and Alamo Heights. Facing a 17-14 deficit in the fourth period, the Cougars used Webb Williams; 27-yard field goal and Tilghman’s 2-yard run in the final minute to turn in another dramatic finish. “It’s easier to get through these situations when the kids expect to win,” Clark coach Lloyd Alexander said. “We’re finding ways to win, but we have to keep getting better. Each week is going to be tough and we have to be ready to play.” First-year school Brandeis gave a gutsy effort against Taft, but the Raiders’ 27-point burst in the second half led to a 41-24 setback. Still, the Broncos had their moments. Brandeis faced a 14-10 halftime deficit and though Taft never lost the advantage, quarterback Michael Barrientos, who threw two of his two touchdown passes in the second half, the Broncos kept things interesting. Any hopes of a late victory ended as Taft came up with clutch plays at the end. Still, the Broncos’ effort earned praise from Taft coach Brian Davenport. “Brandeis got after it,” the Taft coach said. “Coach (John) Campbell and his staff are doing an awesome job with their kids. They are well coached and played hard. They kept coming at us.” TMI-The Episcopal School of Texas, bounced back from last week’s loss to D’Hanis with a 42-7 thumping of Sabinal. Sabinal held a 7-0 lead going into the second quarter, before TMI came to life with a 16-point burst on touchdown runs from Sanford Roberts and Javier Santiago, along with a field goal from Ricard Corda. The Panthers followed with a 20-point third period, highlighted by a 14-yard run from Roberts. Austin Carr added a 6-yard run and Alvand Sehat scored from 1 yard out. Luke Mathus rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 6-yard TD run. Matt Mery led TMI’s rushing with 108 yards on eight carries. In volleyball, O’Connor remained at the top of the pack with wins over Taft and Holmes behind strong play from Kaelen Valdez, Sarah Cardenas, Kendall Solder, Dominque Gonzalez and Amanda Mares. Clark remains close behind in the race after registering a win over Warren. The Lady Cougars received major contributions from Anna Drewry, Ashley Healy, India Hartwell and Andrea Mendicutti. In cross country, this week’s highlight came from Brandeis’ girls team, which won the Incarnate Word Meet. The Broncos totaled 73 points with Alexis Vick leading the way with a gold medal time of 12:31.39. Kaitlyn Warren helped with a 10th place finish.
