By Ray Jeffrey
Bulverde Mayor

Our community deserves a fully-realized public park.  Bulverde is a young city with limited financial resources, but I believe it is time to commit ourselves to deliver an attractive, functional, enjoyable park for our citizens. The City Council is going to revive the Park Committee, and we need public support.

If you live in Bulverde, and have thought about getting involved in civic affairs, this is your opportunity. Serving on a volunteer group such as the Park Committee is a great way to meet people and develop a connection with your community.

The new Park Commit-tee will not have to start from scratch. As a result of massive flooding in 1998, Comal County gained ownership of 12 acres of land in the flood plain on the west side of Bulverde Lane. The terrain is flat and the soil is fertile.

The county incurred the expense of clearing damaged structures, debris and brush. The drainage channel was improved and the culverts were upgraded. The county then agreed to lease the property to the city for use as a park.

The city appointed a Park Committee responsible for planning the development of the park. The committee, which was chaired by County Commissioner Jay Millikin, worked diligently to improve the park.

A park master plan was developed by Bulverde architect Kenny Whistler, who also designed our beautiful new library.  Improvements were made to the park property, but the project gradually slowed to a halt.

Due largely to financial concerns, the city did not provide vigorous leadership or financial support for the project.  There are serious decisions to be made for the future of the park. Some members of the previous committee are willing to serve again, and there is significant interest by City Council in the park. But, we need some energetic, creative volunteers to bring new blood to the task.

I hope you will step forward to help improve Bulverde.
