One really is the loneliest number, no matter what your age. Once thought of as affecting primarily the elderly, loneliness is a growing problem in America.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that more than 10 million Americans 65 or older live alone. Even as many remain independent and active, there are a growing number of seniors that feel isolated and lonely.

Loneliness can mean different things to different people, but in all cases it is a situation that can be improved through positive intervention.

Make an “appointment” with a family member or friend to talk weekly. If you set aside a designated time, you’re more likely to make it a part of your regular routine and something to look forward to. It’s also a great way to check in on someone and their well being.
